A long time ago, back in the 1960s, a close friend asked me to go along with him to a book signing in Sausalito, California. I was introduced to the author. He was a recognizable and quite famous old man. As a portrait artist, I looked closely at the bright blue eyes of a once-handsome man. He said, “Will you come and visit me in San Francisco sometime?” “Yes, I will,” I replied and didn’t think much about it. But within a few weeks my friend was asked by the old author to visit, and I was asked to go along. We arrived that morning to a sunny, tiny apartment. We greeted the old man, and he ushered us in.
