Nadine Johnson, a young African American woman has dreams of becoming an OB/GYN in memory of her mother, who died shortly after her birth. In 1968, scholarships are rare as hen's teeth for a poor black woman in the South. Nadine seeks employment to save money for her tuition and goes to work as a cashier for a rich southern aristocrat named, Herman Crawford. It would be a choice she would come to regret. A gunshot rings out late in the night, instantly killing an innocent victim. It may not have been the shot heard around the world, but it would be heard throughout Holmes County, and that single piece of lead would change the social landscape of Tchula, Mississippi forever.
