He Remains An English Man

It is the 50th anniversary of VE day... May 8, 1995. An RAF Museum near London is being dedicated to the memory of a British war hero who was presumed killed in 1943. At the inauguration, two ageing German women, Stefani Mueller and her mother Gisela Schmidt, appear with the bombshell news that Flight Lieutenant Nigel Weatherly is still alive. Mindful of the Hitler Diaries hoax, the authorities suspect that the women have concocted the story for mercenary reasons, particularly as the man alleged to be the lieutenant is suffering from brain damage and memory loss, and has spent the last 50 years in an East German hospice for war veterans. What is known factually is that Nigel Weatherly, an electronics engineer, was infiltrated into Germany in January 1943, his mission being to subvert the German national radio-broadcasting network. His prime target was the Jan 31, 1943 national radio broadcast in which Herman Goering would try to rationalise the catastrophic German defeat at Stalingrad. After successfully sabotaging the broadcast, Weatherly was never heard from again. The women are subjected to a long and arduous interrogation by British intelligence officers. Their incredible account is in doubt up to the last minute, when one of the investigating team, acting on a flash of inspiration, travels to Germany and unearths the truth.
